Roxy Music Discography

Art-rock pioneers dressed to the nines, playing music that scored an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10.

The band was visually stunning before a single note was played. But the costumes were just a trick. The real treat came when you heard Roxy Music turn conventional rock and roll on its ear. Equally stylish and adventurous, the early Roxy Music albums are classics in the art-rock canon. Their second album, For Your Pleasure, frequently turns up on critics’ all-time greatest lists, although each of their first five albums could be just as easily championed.

Bryan Ferry (piano/vocals) is both the group’s principal songwriter and its most recognizable member. Phil Manzanera (guitar), Andy Mackay (reeds/keyboards) and Paul Thompson (drums) formed the core of the band, while a series of interesting guests and members have rounded out their ranks over the years, none more interesting than their original synthesizer player, Brian Eno. Around the time of Eno’s departure (1973), Ferry began a concurrent solo career, splitting his time between solo and group efforts through the 70s.

After 1975’s Siren, the band took a hiatus, at which point Manzanera also began making solo records. They regrouped in 1977 for Manifesto, which found Roxy Music playing more romantic music that anticipated and strongly influenced the new wave movement to come. Avalon, their final studio album, is considered by many to be their greatest achievement.

After Avalon, the members returned to their solo careers. Not surprisingly, Ferry’s solo records are the closest in sound to latter-day Roxy, splitting his time between painstakingly crafted original material and cover albums. The group influenced a generation of bands that themselves became influential, from Duran Duran to Japan to Ultravox, making it a true statement that the repercussions of Roxy echo to this day.
