Bryan Ferry Discography
Smoke gets in my eyes, every time.
Every generation has one: Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley. My generation had Bryan Ferry and you won’t hear me complain. He was the perfect embodiment of the romantic crooner: smart, sophisticated, slyly subversive. At first, as the driving musical force (and face) of Roxy Music, Ferry was a fork in the mainstream; an alternative path that led inevitably to lonely street. In the second half of the 70s, Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music merged into a single stream. There was little that separated a bride stripped bare from flesh and blood.
After Avalon, Ferry abandoned his band and began making meticulously crafted solo albums that alternated between covers and originals. It was more or less the same direction his solo career had taken during the Roxy years, only a lot more depended on its success as Ferry no longer had another creative outlet. You could make a convincing argument that everything after Avalon was a bit superficial, but you’d need to hold both hands over your ears to do it. The truth is that Ferry’s post-Avalon records strive toward perfection. Sometimes, they fall short of it, sometimes they don’t. If you enjoy the music of Roxy Music (and there’s no reasonable reason not to), you’d be a fool to forsake the music of Bryan Ferry. He is a continental treasure; a Dorian Gary for graybeards who refuse to stop the dance.
