Buffalo Springfield Discography
Imagine The Byrds but without the sense of direction.

Buffalo Springfield were born of a chance encounter in the musical hotbed of Los Angeles and quickly became one of the leading figures in the psychedelic/folk/rock scene. Like The Byrds and The Beatles, the band allowed for the creative development of individual personalities, even more so than those bands. In fact, Buffalo Springfield sounded like a different group not only from writer to writer, but from song to song. You can hear the future sound of Stephen Stills (“For What It’s Worth”), Neil Young (“I Am a Child”) and Richie Furay (“Kind Woman”) in Buffalo Springfield’s music. What you’ll also hear is a lot of experimentation as those writers explored a variety of different musical styles. Given so many strong and distinct musical personalities, their breakup was inevitable. After three albums, they parted ways: Young becoming a solo artist, Stills joining the supergroup Crosby, Stills and Nash, and Jim Messina joining Furay in Poco. Although regarded as an important group, I’m not sure how influential Buffalo Springfield really was. Lots of musicians copied The Byrds and The Beatles, but Buffalo Springfield never established a “sound” that could be defined and copied. Honestly, they didn’t even copy themselves. It was like they threw out the script and started again with each new album. That makes them a fascinating band and unquestionably talented, but I’ve always heard them as something of a brilliant, failed experiment.
