The group Hotlegs is remembered for one novelty single, “Neanderthal Man,” and, of course, as the foundation for the group, 10cc. The project originally started as a collaboration between Lol Creme and Kevin Godley under the doomed name of Frabjoy and Runcible Spoon. Fortunately, the pair met producer Eric Stewart in the process and rechristened themselves as the easier-to-remember Hotlegs. Their first album, Thinks: School Stinks, featured the songs written by Godley and Creme, now fleshed out with Stewart’s help on the arrangements. Nothing on the album approached the success of “Neanderthal Man,” and the trio moved on to brighter pastures as 10cc with Graham Gouldman. A few songs on Thinks: School Stinks do point forward to the 10cc sound, notably “Take Me Back.” A later compilation, titled You Didn’t Like It Because You Didn’t Think of It, collected the first album with various odds and ends including the nonalbum single, “Lady Sadie” b/w “Loser, the first to be credited to all three members of Hotlegs.
