Polyrock: “Romantic Me” (1980)

The band’s first single made the Top 100… on the disco charts. Go figure.

Kronomyth 1.1: Heart of Glass.

The opening moments of Romantic Me suggest a wonderful mix of Brian Eno’s seminal art rock albums (Taking Tiger Mountain, Here Come The Warm Jets), Television and Philip Glass’ own droning keyboards. An intimidating collection of names, to be sure, which begs the question of why Polyrock didn’t build more of a following among alternative rock fans. You won’t find the answer in Your Dragging Feet or (on the promotional 12-inch) No Love Lost, two more compelling arguments for Polyrock’s artistic credibility. All three tracks can be found in an identical state on the band’s eponymous debut, which is the wiser investment (if you haven’t already). Oddly, Polyrock had better luck on the dance floor, where “Dragging Your Feet” b/w “Romantic Me” charted in the lower half of disco charts.
