You might have missed him behind those angry young men named Graham Parker, Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson, but the mischievous middle-aged man named Nick Lowe was no slouch next to them. With his unfashionably long and prematurely graying hair, Lowe struck an avuncular figure next to the brilliant brit pack and their bad complexions. Although only five years older than Elvis, Nick Lowe was already a veteran of the music scene (Kippington Lodge, Brinsley Schwarz) when he became both the house producer and inaugural act for Stiff Records, releasing the single “So It Goes” in the Summer of 1976.
Lowe produced several high-profile recordings, including the debut albums by Elvis Costello and The Damned, before recording his own first full-length record, Jesus of Cool. The album cover, which featured Nick Lowe in various guises, captured the appeal of Nick Lowe: He may have nicked other people’s styles, but he rarely stole the same trick twice. If Elvis was disgusted, Nick tried be be amused on songs like “Marie Provost,” “Nutted By Reality,” “Rollers Show” and “I Love My Label,” and listeners laughed along with him.
The followup, Labour of Lust, gave Nick Lowe his biggest hit, a remake of an earlier B side, “Cruel To Be Kind.” That album was again a potpourri of pop magic, although Lowe was careful to include a little rockabilly, country and even a romantic ballad into the mix. Shortly after, Lowe rekindled his relationship with Rockpile. Seconds of Pleasure featured a mix of songs from Lowe and Dave Edmunds and had a more pronounced country/rockabilly feel than Lowe’s earlier efforts. His next album, Nick The Knife, included a reworking of Rockpile’s “Heart” amidst the usual dozen interesting ideas, although in retrospect it marked a slight decline in Lowe’s solo records. The Abomininable Showman, Nick Lowe And His Cowboy Outfit and The Rose of England each had their share of good ideas and a few groans too.
Since the second half of the 80s, new records have arrived with less frequency. His latter-day efforts are generally well crafted and some, such as At My Age, have garnered high praise—but then what else would you expect from a late bloomer like Lowe?
