The Moody Blues began as just another band of English boys hoping to duplicate the success of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and the band looked like they might be headed in that direction when their version of “Go Now!” topped the UK charts at the end of 1964. After a few more singles, however, their star began to fade and guitarist/vocalist Denny Laine left the band. The Moody Blues might have become no more than the answer to a trivia question but for the addition of songwriters Justin Hayward and John Lodge. A few tentative singles followed before the band was invited to make an audio demonstration record mixing pop and classical music by their label, Decca Records. Seizing on the opportunity, The Moody Blues and composer Peter Knight conspired to make the album a true merger of classical and pop music rather than the side-by-side format originally envisioned by Decca. The resulting record, Days of Future Passed, proved to be a landmark pop record, mixing poetry, orchestrated pop music and a new invention called the mellotron into a concept album centered on a single day. “Nights In White Satin” and “Forever Afternoon (Tuesday)” became two of the earliest and most enduring examples of progressive rock.
Over the next five years, The Moody Blues followed the template set forth on Future Passed with a string of trippy, chart-topping albums that showcased the band’s five unique songwriting voices: the spoken poetry of Graeme Edge, the stylized ballads of Ray Thomas, the elevated romantic pop of Justin Hayward, the (relatively) heavier rock of John Lodge and the ambitious writing of Mike Pinder. Highlights from this period include “Ride My See-Saw,” “Question,” “The Story In Your Eyes” and “I’m Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band).” In the mid 70s, the band took a break as each individual member released solo albums; the best of these, Blue Jays, was a combined effort from Hayward and Lodge. In 1978, the band regrouped for a final effort, Octave, and then called it a day.
Or so it seemed. But as the 80s dawned, The Moody Blues (now with ex-Yes keyboardist Patrick Moraz) found a new audience for their grandiose pop with Long Distance Voyager. Sounding more like ELO or the soon-to-be-reconstituted Yes, the second coming of The Moody Blues traded in the trippy mellotron arrangements for synthesizers and science fiction imagery. Highlights from the second period include “The Voice,” “Gemini Dream,” “Your Wildest Dreams” and “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere.” Since then, the band has continued to release albums to a loyal (if diminishing) audience and in the process has become something of a living icon of the 60s. At the core of the Moodies’ appeal is a classical sense of beauty that remains timeless, ensuring that our children’s children will discover the joys of Futures Passed and Lost Chords themselves.
