Lou Reed Discography

Lou Reed was the musical embodiment of New York City in all its various dichotomies: crass, intellectual, crazy, cunning, homosexual, heterosexual, senator, strung-out addict, and so on. He was brilliant. He was blasé. He was both at the same time. He’d seen everything, done everything, and come out the other side transformed as a terrifying Jekyll-Hyde hybrid. He was a pretty decent guitarist too.

Reed came to notoriety as the leader of Velvet Underground, one of the most influential rock & roll bands of all time, and certainly the most influential band that most people hadn’t heard of in the late 60s. (The Stooges ran a close second.) In the 70s, he re-emerged as a solo artist, creating a massive body of work that included legendary highs and lows. The first record, Lou Reed, was a tentative step in the right direction that recycled some leftover ideas, but the David Bowie-produced Transformer was the real breakthrough, exposing an alternative underground lifestyle that few could have imagined. The brilliant, conceptual song-cycle Berlin followed, capped by a terrific live album, Rock ‘N’ Roll Animal. Those last three albums represent the height of Reed’s achievement as a solo artist.

What came after was sometimes inspired (Street Hassle, New York), sometimes exasperating (Metal Machine Music, Sally Can’t Dance), but rarely less than interesting. As the 70s progressed, Reed put aside his mask (save for a pair of black sunglasses) and became domesticated. He got married (in 1980, to Sylvia Morales) and began writing normal rocks songs about love, work and the news, with an edginess that befit an elder statesmen of rock & roll’s alternative royalty. While little of what Reed recorded during the 80s added to his legend, that changed with 1989’s New York, a poignant return to the New York City underworld that inspired Transformer. It marked a resurgence of interest in Lou Reed that returned him to his former iconic status. The new works that followed were infrequent but intelligent. He passed away on October 27, 2013, to join the great Halloween parade in the hereafter.
