The seed of a hogweed, carried perhaps by a European swallow if you prefer, traveled from that verdant land called England and lodged itself into the fertile bosom of the American Midwest where, beginning in the middle seventies, it yielded a hearty crop of progressive rock led by bands such as Styx, Starcastle and, of course, Kansas. Lacking their own legends, American proggers borrowed heavily from English sources: Arthurian tales, Europe’s classical constructs, magical creatures. At first, it was a clumsy reimagining; in time, however, Kansas and Styx created a uniquely American prog sound that rivaled the meisterworks of the original masters. The first Kansas album introduced the world to the songwriting of Kerry Livgren and Steve Walsh. Livgren, a Christian, was clearly influenced by the leading English progressive rock bands (Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc.). Walsh favored American rock and roll. Together, the pair created a shifting dynamic in the music of Kansas (similar to Styx) that alternated between proggy flights of fancy and shorter songs that rocked out. The rest of the band brought these ideas to life: Robbie Steinhardt (violin and lead vocals), Phil Ehart (drums), Rich Williams (lead guitar) and Dave Hope (bass). Their first three albums have their moments, but it was on Leftoverture that Kansas became stars. Led by “Carry On Wayward Son,” that album artfully combined prog, rock and a Christian message in a way that hadn’t been done before. Point of Know Return, which featured “Dust in the Wind,” repeated the feat. These two albums stand as the peak of Kansas and would make any shortlist of the greatest American prog albums ever made. The band continued to be commercially and artistically successful through Monolith and Audio-Visions, but Livgren and Walsh drifted apart creatively, with Walsh leaving the band in 1980. Their next album, Vinyl Confessions, featured John Elefante (also a Christian) replacing Walsh. By the mid 80s, Walsh was back and Livgren was out. The pair reunited for Somewhere to Elsewhere before Livgren left again to start a new band, Proto-Kaw.
